After a sale, before an export or because the vehicle is being taken off the road: sooner or later almost every keeper faces the question of how to deregister a car correctly. The process is simpler than expected — once you know the order of steps.

When must a car be deregistered?

  • On sale without plate transfer: the new keeper registers the vehicle in their name; your plates go back to the road traffic office or onto your next car.
  • On export: before leaving the country the vehicle is deregistered and receives an export certificate.
  • On decommissioning: if you won't use a vehicle for a longer period, depositing the plates saves tax and insurance.
  • On scrapping: after disposal the registration document is cancelled.

How deregistration works

  1. Remove the number plates and prepare them together with the registration document.
  2. Submit them to the road traffic office of your canton — in person or by post. Many cantons also offer online services.
  3. Cancellation: the office cancels the registration document ("annulliert" stamp) and confirms the plate return.
  4. Inform your insurer: with the deregistration confirmation the insurance obligation ends; overpaid premiums are refunded pro rata.
Important: vehicle tax accrues until the plates arrive at the office — not until your last day of driving. So don't delay the return unnecessarily.

Special case sale: who deregisters?

In a private sale within Switzerland the vehicle doesn't have to be deregistered: the buyer can register it directly with a valid proof of insurance.
